Valued since antiquity, frankincense, a woodsy, spicy-scented resin, has been used for thousands of years in religious and medical settings and during embalmment. Ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, and Greeks prized frankincense for its aromatic and therapeutic properties, and the resin is still valued worldwide today.

Facts about Frankincense

  • Traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, use frankincense for its purported healing properties. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritated skin. Rich in natural compounds, particularly boswellic acids, frankincense can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. Many believe it to have anti-aging effects because it promotes collagen production and improves skin elasticity. 

  • Used to reduce stress and promote a sense of tranquility, its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties make it a relaxing tonic used to relieve muscle tension. 

  • Burned frequently as an offering during prayer, festivals, or celebrations, frankincense has been used for millennia across all the major religions. The Bible lists frankincense as one of the gifts the Three Wise Men offer to baby Jesus.

To harvest the resin, cuts are carefully made in the trunk of the Boswellia tree. Resin seeps out, hardening into “tears” after being exposed to air. These teardrops of hardened resin are collected and distilled for their essential oil or other uses.

Frankincense is available in different grades, depending the location and specific type of Boswellia tree from which it is harvested. The highest grade of frankincense available is Royal Green Hojari frankincense (Boswellia sacra).
